Schneider’s New Home EV Charger Has One Job: Killing the $6,500 Panel Upgrade

The biggest bill in home EV charging often isn’t the charger — it’s the electrician. Schneider Electric thinks it can make that line item disappear. The French electrical giant this week launched Schneider Charge, a Level 2 residential charger for the US and Canada with dynamic load management built directly into the unit, aimed squarely at the thousands of dollars in panel and service upgrades that stop many households from installing home charging at all.

The specs

Schneider Charge delivers up to 11.5 kW at 48 amps — the practical ceiling for residential Level 2 — through a 25-foot hardwired cable. Buyers choose between a native J3400 (NACS) connector for Tesla-style ports or the classic J1772 plug that most current non-Tesla EVs still use. The unit is UL 3141-certified and speaks OCPP 1.6, and a companion app handles charge scheduling, monitoring, and settings so owners can push charging into cheap overnight rate windows.

Plenty of 48-amp wallboxes exist. What sets this one apart is SmartAmp, Schneider’s integrated load-management system. Using current transformers included in the box, the charger monitors the whole home’s electrical draw in real time and automatically dials back charging speed when the oven, dryer, or air conditioner kicks on — then ramps back up when capacity frees. Crucially, it does this without a separate energy-monitoring gateway, without extra hardware purchases, and even without Wi-Fi.

That matters because of math most shoppers only discover after buying an EV: many older homes with 100-amp service can’t legally accommodate a fixed 48-amp circuit on top of existing loads. The traditional fix is a service or panel upgrade that Schneider pegs at $2,000 to $6,500 or more — sometimes exceeding the cost of the car’s first year of electricity many times over. Dynamic load management sidesteps the problem by guaranteeing the charger will never push the home past its limit, letting inspectors sign off without new copper in the wall.

“By building load management into the charger, we’re making home EV charging easier to install with less complexity and disruption for homeowners,” said Shawn Bonacorsi, Schneider Electric’s head of electrification solutions.

Availability

The hardwired version is on sale now through Schneider’s authorized distributors and its online marketplace, with professional installation available through a partnership with Qmerit. A plug-in version is slated for early 2027. Schneider hasn’t published a retail price yet — a notable omission, since the value pitch depends on total installed cost versus a cheaper charger plus a panel upgrade.

What it means

Home charging is where roughly 80 percent of EV charging actually happens, and installation cost — not charger cost — is its biggest barrier, especially in the older housing stock where EV adoption needs to grow next. Load management used to be a premium add-on requiring extra boxes and configuration; Schneider folding it into the charger itself, from a company that also makes the breaker panels in millions of North American homes, signals it’s becoming table stakes. With Tesla, Emporia, and Wallbox all circling the same problem, the winner of the home-charging race may not be whoever charges fastest, but whoever makes the electrician’s visit shortest.
