Self-Driving Mustang Mach-Es Hit London: Uber and Wayve Launch the UK’s First Autonomous Rides

Robotaxis are no longer just an American and Chinese story. On September 3, Uber and London-based AI firm Wayve switched on the United Kingdom’s first autonomous ride-hailing service, putting self-driving, all-electric Ford Mustang Mach-Es to work on some of the most chaotic streets in Europe.

How the Service Works

There’s no separate robotaxi tier and no premium price. Londoners requesting a regular UberX, Uber Electric, or Uber Comfort trip can simply be matched with an autonomous Mach-E at the standard upfront fare — and they’re free to accept or decline the match before the car arrives. More than 140,000 riders had already opted in through the app’s Trip Preferences by launch day.

The cars run Wayve’s AI Driver software with a surround-sensor suite, and the service covers trips anywhere in London except airports. Riders unlock the car with the Uber app and follow the planned route on an in-car screen that supports 64 languages.

One important caveat: these rides are supervised. A trained safety driver licensed by Transport for London sits behind the wheel, ready to take over. Fully driverless commercial services must wait for the UK’s Automated Vehicles Act to come fully into force, which isn’t expected until late 2027.

Why Wayve Is Different

Unlike Waymo’s meticulously mapped operations, Wayve has built its reputation on an end-to-end AI approach that learns to drive rather than following high-definition maps — a philosophy closer to Tesla’s camera-first strategy, but developed on London’s roundabouts, double-parked lorries, and jaywalking pedestrians. “We’re proud to introduce the Wayve AI Driver to the public for the first time right here in London,” said Wayve co-founder and CEO Alex Kendall.

Uber’s global head of autonomous mobility, Sarfraz Maredia, called the launch the first step in a much bigger plan: Wayve-powered vehicles are slated to join Uber’s network in 12 markets worldwide. Next up is Tokyo, where Nissan Leafs running Wayve’s AI Driver on NVIDIA DRIVE Hyperion hardware are due to start carrying passengers later in 2026. Even the British government leaned into the moment, with Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander calling it “a major milestone for the future of transport in London.”

The Global Robotaxi Race Just Got a Third Front

The timing is hard to miss. Within the same week, Tesla put its production Cybercab to work in Austin, Waymo continued scaling across US cities, and China’s Baidu, Pony.ai, and WeRide kept expanding at home and in the Middle East. London — with its left-hand traffic, dense urban core, and famously assertive drivers — is arguably the toughest public test any autonomous system has taken on, and it gives Europe a homegrown contender for the first time.

What It Means

For EV watchers, the fleet choice matters as much as the software. Every vehicle in this launch — the Mach-Es today, the Leafs coming to Tokyo — is fully electric, reinforcing that the robotaxi era and the EV era are arriving as a package deal. The supervised format may look timid next to Waymo’s empty driver’s seats, but it’s a deliberate regulatory on-ramp: build public trust and operational miles now, then pull the safety driver when the Automated Vehicles Act allows in late 2027. If Wayve’s learned-driving approach holds up on London streets, the company that taught its AI in the hardest classroom may end up with the most transferable skills in the industry — exactly the bet Uber is making across 12 markets.
